HOW LONG IS 3 YEARS?

The image is printed on Rives BFK Off-White (280gsm) and is a combination of positive plate lithography and serigraphy. The edition size is only 8, with a minimal ½” white border around the print that makes each panel 21” x 28”.

This was a final semester-long project for my undergraduate journey at University of Wisconsin-Madison. This set of 4 panels titled, “1202 Days”, “172 Weeks”, “39 Months”, “3 Years”,is part of the series “How long is 3 years?”. These panels showcase a narrative that is close to my heart. Having moved around frequently before settling down in Madison, I felt lost and always had to navigate through the different identities that I put forward; as a student, as an employee, and even as a daughter.

Being surrounded by the like-minded community in Madison allowed me to rediscover my true self. I felt at ease with sharing my different identities, hence similar characters are repeated all over the panels - they represent different aspects of me in different situations, but they are all me.

Some might ask why the long arms? Well, the long arms are representative of emotions associated with the inability to control situations and circumstances that extend beyond my control; so close within grasp but yet so far out of reach.

My color palette is distinctive as a style; I like to use bold and vibrant colors within my prints. This print was no exception, I used color to highlight the minute details within each panel. Each panel contains 4 lithographic layers, at least 6 layers of screen-print and definitely more than 20 colors which showcased the printmaking techniques I have picked up during my time at UW-Madison.
